Key headlines

The main headlines in the regulated qualifications market in England for the 2022 to 2023 academic year were:

  • There were 10,700 active qualifications (available qualifications with certificates) in the academic year 2022 to 2023, a 5.6% decrease from the 2021 to 2022 academic year.

  • A total of 11.3 million certificates were issued for general, vocational and other qualifications in England, up 2.7% from the 2021 to 2022 academic year.

  • There were 6.2 million GCSE, AS and A level certificates awarded in the 2022 to 2023 academic year, up by 2.3% from the previous year.

  • There were 5.1 million certificates awarded for vocational and other qualifications in the 2022 to 2023 academic year, up by 3.1% from the 2021 to 2022 academic year.

  • The awarding organisations with the largest overall market shares (by number of certificates issued) were AQA (34.4%), Pearson (20.1%), OCR (6.6%) and City & Guilds (4.9%).
