The Government Chemist was invited to provide two contributions to the the latest Separation Science online seminar Advances in Food Safety Analysis Fraud and Authenticity.
This seminar brings together some of the leading exponents in food safety analysis and provides a learning environment for scientists working in these fields and takes place in two 2-hour sessions.
The focus of this years eSeminar is food fraud and authenticity testing.
In Part I of the seminar Selvarani Elahi, Deputy Government Chemist, discusses the new Virtual Food Authenticity Network. The Network aims to raise awareness of the tools available to check for mislabelling and food fraud. It will allow consumers to have confidence in the food they buy, ensuring the UK has access to a resilient network of laboratories providing fit-for-purpose testing for food authenticity.
In the second session, Michael Walker discusses what food fraud is, describing the distinctions between food authenticity, food fraud and food crime. He covers some of the current progress being made in the UK to combat food fraud and highlights the potential analytical priorities of the future.
