The statement outlines PHEs capabilities to support low and middle income countries strengthen their public health capacity and respond to outbreaks and emergencies. It also describes activities of relevance to higher income countries where PHE may assist on issues of global health security.

Dr Mark Salter at PHE said:

We provide a wide range of international public health assistance drawing expertise from across the whole organisation. The capability statement pulls together this knowledge and experience into one easily accessible document.

Our International work is managed through short and longer term secondments, rapid deployments, delivery of technical advice, international visits, training and development placements, workshops and research partnerships. In many cases ongoing long-term collaboration, including distance mentoring combined with targeted visits has proved very effective.

PHE has developed strong collaborations with a number of key partners nationally and internationally. Relationships with multinational partners, bilateral partners, NGOs, UK government departments, UN agencies and universities are key to the success of PHEs global programmes. Successful relationships have also been built with many different funders and the feasibility of setting up a PHE global health foundation to help expand global activities is being assessed.
