Appointments and reappointments to the Animals in Science Committee

Nine new members have been appointed to the Animals in Science Committee (ASC) for 3 years. This follows the reappointment of the Chair and 5 existing members for a further 3 years. This brings the current complement of members to 15.

The role of the ASC is to advise the Secretary of State on all matters concerning the use of animals in scientific procedures and advise animal welfare ethical review bodies on sharing best practice within the UK.

The Chair of the ASC, Professor David Main, has been reappointed to a second term which will end in May 2025.

The 9 new members appointed for a first term of 3 years, ending in January and February 2027, are:

  • Professor Jonathan Birch, Professor of Philosophy, Department of Philosophy, Logic and Scientific Method, London School of Economics and Political Science
  • Mrs Caroline Chadwick, semi-retired
  • Dr Stuart Greenhill, Senior Lecturer in Neuroscience and Associate Dean, College of Health and Life Sciences, Aston University
  • Professor Martin Knight, Professor of Mechanobiology, School of Engineering and Materials Science, Queen Mary, University of London (job share)
  • Mrs Tina OMahony, Biofacility Manager, Cambridge University
  • Professor Hazel Screen, Professor of Biomedical Engineering, School of Engineering and Materials Science, Queen Mary, University of London (job share)
  • Dr Dharaminder Singh, Principal Bioengineer, CN Bio Innovations
  • Dr Carl Westmoreland, Science and Technology Lead, Safety and Environmental Assurance Centre, Unilever
  • Dr Lucy Whitfield, Director, OWL Vets Ltd.

The 4 members reappointed for a second term of 3 years, ending March 2026, are:

  • Professor Johanna Gibson, Herchel Smith Professor of Intellectual Property Law, School of Law, Queen Mary, University of London
  • Professor Andrew Jackson, Professor of Neural Interfaces, Faculty of Medical Sciences Newcastle University
  • Professor Stephen May, Senior Vice-Principal and Professor of Education, The Royal Veterinary College, University of London
  • Professor Christine J Watson, Professor Emeritus of Cell and Cancer Biology, Department of Pathology, University of Cambridge
