Why your research is important to us

You can help us achieve our research priorities for flood and coastal erosion risk management in England and Wales. We describe these as areas of research interest.

When we consider supporting research partnerships, we look for proposals that closely align with our strategic priorities in England and Wales and our areas of research interest.

Read our flood and coastal erosion risk management areas of research interest before you submit your request. We will ask you how your proposal meets our priorities.

We are particularly interested in supporting research proposals that could be considered as world leading.? We will ask you to tell us if you consider your research to be world leading and why as part of the application process.

How we determine if we can support your research

When we assess your application, we will consider the following 4 questions:

1. Does the proposal help us deliver our priorities?

2. Have we had the opportunity to shape the development of the research proposal?

3. What impact will the research have on applied flood and coastal risk management?

4. How innovative is the proposal and could the work be considered as world leading?

Scoring against the above will guide us when deciding on the level and type of support we may offer a proposal.

The support we can offer

The types of support we can offer your research proposal include:

  • providing a letter of support to your prospective funders
  • funding
  • our staff time
  • provision of data

When applying for support, you should be clear about what you need from us, whether funding, time, or data.

If you require staff time from us, tell us what input you are seeking for the lifetime of the project. For example, this could include time to attend advisory boards, meetings, and workshops. Also tell us what expertise you are seeking to support your work.

Manage your expectations

We receive many requests for support and evaluate requests and proposals objectively. We concentrate our support on research proposals that:

  • directly contribute to our areas of research interest

  • we have had the opportunity to steer and shape

  • will provide the greatest impact on applied flood and coastal erosion risk management

  • are innovative and world leading

We have limited resources. We cannot directly support every proposal we receive.
