Healthcare UK celebrates a successful year at Arab Health 2014

One year on from its launch in January 2013, Healthcare UK has returned to Dubai, and the Arab Health event. The organisation is celebrating the progress which has been made over the last 12 months, and its work to help British healthcare win business overseas.

Over 100 delegates from the UK, the UAE and the wider Gulf region attended International Partnerships for Healthcare Excellence: One Year On. The event was hosted by Lord Kakkar, Professor of Surgery at University College London and the UK Business Ambassador for Healthcare, and Marwan Abedin, Chief Executive Officer, Dubai Healthcare City.

Lord Kakkar said:

Our focus at Arab Health 2014 is partnership and emphasising the success of relationships forged over the last year between UK organisations and healthcare providers from this region. Since our launch at Arab Health 2013, Healthcare UK has established itself as the bridge between British healthcare organisations and governments and providers around the world who are planning significant healthcare developments.

Guest speakers included HE Dr Mohammed Al Saidi, the Omani Minister of Health and HE Raja Al Gurg, Managing Director of Easa Saleh Al Gurg Group and a member of the UK-UAE Business Council.

The programme featured examples of partnerships forged between British organisations and partners in the Gulf region. Mark Melvin of TPP Ltd discussed their collaboration with Jeraisy of Saudi Arabia. Heather Smith, the administrator of the BrightPoint Womens Hospital in Abu Dhabi introduced the joint venture between Oxford Fertility Unit and NMC Healthcare of the UAE. Azeem Akhtar of BT Health described the partnerships which BT has established in the region.

Howard Lyons, Managing Director of Healthcare UK commented:

The year started with the launch at Arab Health in January, when 250 companies exhibited and 20 organisations participated in a mission led by Earl Howe and Lord Darzi. It ended with the Prime Ministers Special Trade Envoy for Healthcare, the Rt Hon Kenneth Clarke MP, heading a delegation of 50 representatives of healthcare organisations to five cities in China.

During 2013, Healthcare UK supported 24 major events across the Middle East, China, India, Brazil and several other countries. Already UK organisations have signed contracts to collaborate internationally.

The range of activities highlighted in the review of 2013 illustrates the progress which has been made to create a clear route into UK capabilities for overseas partners. All the components which constitute the world-renowned UK health service the NHS, commercial companies and academic institutions are attracting attention around the world he continued.
