This guide is for approved driving instructors (ADIs), motorcycle trainers, and lorry and bus (vocational) trainers. It explains:

  • how local restrictions are affecting driving lessons and motorcycle training
  • how you should work safely during coronavirus
  • what support is available for businesses and the self-employed
  • how driving tests are affected by coronavirus

  1. Guidance has been reviewed and updated. Because of coronavirus (COVID-19), you can only supervise members of your household or support bubble as part of travel for work, education or other essential journeys. This applies in England, Scotland and Wales.

  2. Removed "unless it's with someone from your household during an essential journey" in England from 1. Driving lessons and motorcycle training: local restrictions.

  3. Updated to say you must not provide driving lessons or motorcycle training in England, Scotland or Wales unless it's with someone from your household during an essential journey.

  4. Added other areas that are currently in Tier 4 in England, where all driving lessons and motorcycle training are suspended.

  5. Updated the information about restrictions in Wales to confirm that motorcycle training and tractor driving lessons are not allowed in level 4 areas.

  6. Added information about the suspension of driving lessons and tests in areas in Tier 4 in England. Updated information about the suspension of driving lessons and tests in areas in alert level 4 in Wales.

  8. Updated to confirm driving lessons can restart in all areas in England from Wednesday 2 December, and driving tests will restart in tier 1 and 2 areas on Wednesday 2 December, and in tier 3 areas on Thursday 3 December.

  18. Added the date that driving tests candidates who live in Wales will start to be invited by email to arrange their tests if it was cancelled because of coronavirus.
