The report of the Independent Medicines and Medical Devices Safety (IMMDS) Review was published on 8 July 2020.

On 21 July 2021, we published our response to the IMMDS review, which details the governments response to the reviews 9 strategic recommendations and 50 actions for improvement.

The Independent Report of the Patient Reference Group was published alongside this response. The Patient Reference Group was established to provide advice, challenge and scrutiny to work to develop the government response to the IMMDS review.

This implementation report provides an update on the governments progress to implement the 2021 government response to the review and improve patient safety. It:

  • sets out the steps the government is taking to implement the accepted strategic recommendations and actions for improvement
  • provides more detail on the governments work on sodium valproate and pelvic mesh

  1. The original publication stated that NHS Digital had carried out an audit of all pelvic floor surgery in 2010, using Hospital Episode Statistics data in addition to data from other sources. This has been corrected to say that the audit covered pelvic floor surgeries completed between 2006 and 2011, and used only Hospital Episode Statistics data.
