The CMA investigates the impact of certain potential mergers and assesses how they could impact competition in the UK.
Tens of thousands of mergers take place each year where the CMA does not intervene PwC estimated that 50,000 took place globally in 2023 alone. We only intervene if we think the deal is truly problematic and could have a negative impact on people, businesses or the UK economy.
In 2024, we considered 1,037 mergers but only formally investigated 38 (3.6%) of them.
Less than 1% of mergers considered in 2024 were blocked or abandoned.
