Thank you Special Rapporteur for your update and for your continued efforts as you fulfil your mandate.
The United Kingdom condemns the military coup in Myanmar and I reiterate today our call on the military to respect the human rights of the people of Myanmar and their democratic wishes. Arbitrary arrests, deaths of innocents, and restrictions to rights and freedoms continue across the country. These must cease.
You have set out the devastating impact of the coup on already vulnerable communities. We must remain alert to the experiences of the most marginalised and those at risk of being targeted for their identity. Space must be retained to continue to support civil society groups who are trusted by these communities.
What began as a political crisis is fast becoming an economic and humanitarian crisis. The UN estimates that 200,000 people have been displaced in border areas since 1 February. As called for in the Resolutions of both the Special Session and the 46th Session of the Human Rights Council, the safe and unimpeded humanitarian access to all people in need is vital.
