Landmark Security Council resolution establishing new African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia
Explanation of Vote by Ambassador James Kariuki at the UN Security Council briefing on the situation in Somalia

Thank you, Madam President. We don’t usually make EOVs on resolutions adopted by consensus, but in this case, I wanted to thank Council Members for their support in the adoption of this landmark resolution.

I wanted to pay tribute to the troop and police contributing countries who served in AMISOM, and all those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

I wanted to thank in particular those partners – the Somali government, the UN, the AU, the EU – who contributed in developing the proposal for ATMIS, and to continue the transition in the fight against Shabaab.

And finally, I wanted to pay tribute to my team and all the experts who worked tirelessly to get us to where we are.

Thank you.
