The following statistics were released today by the Department of Health:

The key points from the latest release are:

  • During the quarter ending 30 September 2011, 12,952 elective operations were cancelled at the last minute for non-clinical reasons. In the same period in 2010, there were 12,991 cancelled elective operations.
  • Cancelled elective operations during the quarter represented 0.7% of all elective activity compared to 0.7% in the corresponding period in 2010.
  • Of these cancellations, 415 (3.2%) of patients were not treated within 28 days of a cancellation.  In the same period in 2010, 351 (2.7%) of patients were not treated within 28 days.
