Wales office minister Lord Bourne visited Cardiff prison today to see how one of Wales biggest prisons provides training and resettlement support for offenders.
During a tour of the jail, he met prison and probation staff as well as prisoners to discuss how the prison prepares offenders for release into the community.
Lord Bourne visited the reception area, first night wing, segregation unit, education department and workshops.
He also had lunch at the Clink Restaurant, where prisoners are training to be chefs and waiters, whilst undertaking hospitality-related qualifications in a real work environment. The restaurant was recently rated number one in Cardiff on TripAdvisor.
Speaking after the visit, Lord Bourne said:
I am extremely impressed by the commitment and dedication of staff at Cardiff prison who work tirelessly to help offenders turn their lives around.
Almost every prisoner in Cardiff prison will be released at some point so it is essential that they can access the training and support they need to get a job and lead a life free from crime.
The quality of the food and service in Cardiffs Clink restaurant shows why it has become one of the most popular places to eat out in the city. The restaurant plays an important role in helping rehabilitate prisoners from across South Wales and I am delighted to give it my support.
