Rail Accident Investigation Branch

March 21
10:59 2016

At around 12:25 on 23 February 2016, a pedestrian crossing the railway at Grimston Lane level crossing was struck and fatally injured by a train travelling from Ipswich to Felixstowe.

The footpath only crossing, which is over one railway track, links two parts of Grimston Lane, an unclassified tarmac road on the western edge of Trimley St Martin, leading through farmland to Trimley Lower Street.

Our investigation will identify the sequence of events which led to the accident and consider any factors which may have influenced the actions of the pedestrian. It will also consider whether the design and/or management of the crossing were factors in the accident.

Our investigation is independent of any investigation by the railway industry, the Office of Road and Rail (ORR) or the British Transport Police.

We will publish our findings, including any safety recommendations at the conclusion of our investigation; these will be available on our website.

You can subscribe to automated emails notifying you when we publish our reports.
