Were developing a new route into teaching - the teacher degree apprenticeship. It will be a high-quality initial teacher training (ITT) course. Apprentices will get an undergraduate degree alongside qualified teacher status (QTS).

Were inviting applications from providers and partnerships to take part in a funding pilot for the secondary mathematics teacher degree apprenticeship. Successful providers will:

• design teacher degree apprenticeship courses in secondary mathematics
• partner with employing schools to deliver the teacher degree apprenticeship

Schools that employ trainees as part of the pilot will receive financial incentives to support with trainee salary costs. This is to cover the proportion of time trainees will spend studying towards their qualification. This funding is available for up to 150 trainees in total.

Employers will also have access to the apprenticeship levy to fund training and assessment costs for the teacher degree apprenticeship.

What youll get

Well provide grant funding for successful applicants of up to 12,500 per provider or partnership. This is to support with course development costs.

If successful, well put you in contact with a named Department for Education (DfE) official. They can help with general queries and any concerns.

Eligibility

To apply for the pilot, an organisation or partnership must:

• be an existing provider weve accredited to deliver ITT leading to QTS
• be a degree-awarding institution
• be on the apprenticeship provider and assessment register at the point of application
• already be offering mathematics ITT courses and undergraduate mathematics degree courses

You can also be in a partnership with an accredited ITT provider or a degree-awarding institution. If youre applying as a partnership, both organisations must already be on the apprenticeship provider and assessment register.

Providers should have an Ofsted inspection rating of 1 (outstanding) or 2 (good) for your secondary QTS provision.

Whats involved

We expect the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education to publish the teacher degree apprenticeship standard in spring 2024. We can share a draft version of the standard in advance on request. Youll be able to start recruiting trainees from autumn 2024. The first training year will start in autumn 2025.

Youll need to:

• create a secondary mathematics teacher degree apprenticeship course incorporating the ITT core content framework which:
  • meets the ITT criteria
  • allows trainees to gain an undergraduate degree and meet the teachers standards
• make best efforts to recruit at least 25 trainees per provider or partnership onto the pilot
• build a network of schools to employ teacher degree apprenticeship trainees to start from autumn 2025
• ensure trainees can feed back on the programme and share this information with DfE
• award an undergraduate degree and QTS to all trainees who have met the teachers standards at the end of the course

Schools will employ teacher degree apprenticeship trainees for the whole of the 4-year course. We expect that trainees on this course will spend an average of approximately 40% of their working week at university studying towards their qualification. Schools that employ trainees as part of the pilot will receive financial incentives to support with trainee salary costs to cover the time they will spend at university.
