Official Statistics: Transport use during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic

Department For Transport

November 30
09:30 2022

Details

On Wednesday 22 November 2022, the National Rail data was revised, with changes backdated to the start of the series. This revision involved switching from using pre-allocation (sales) data to using post-allocation (earnings) data, and including refunds and TfL sold products. This revision reflects changes to passenger purchasing behaviour as demand has recovered from COVID-19. The Office of Rail and Road carried out a review of this revised methodology and concluded that it is appropriate for DfT to switch to make these changes.

Please note that following user feedback collated by the department, publishing frequency for these statistics will be changing from weekly to monthly. The first monthly statistics will be released on the Wednesday 14 December 2022, and will be published on the second Wednesday of the month following that.

The final weekly publication will be released on Wednesday 7 December 2022.

These statistics on transport use are published weekly.

For each day, the Department for Transport (DfT) produces statistics on domestic transport:

  1. road traffic in Great Britain
  2. rail passenger journeys in Great Britain
  3. Transport for London (TfL) tube and bus routes
  4. bus travel in Great Britain (excluding London)
  5. cycling in England

The full time series for these statistics, starting 1 March 2020, is usually published here every Wednesday at 9.30am.

The associated methodology notes set out information on the data sources and methodology used to generate these headline measures.

For the charts previously published alongside daily coronavirus press conferences, please see the slides and datasets to accompany coronavirus press conferences.
