The council carried out an audit of Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit claims for hand arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). The audit found some claimants were being refused benefit on the basis of their medical history, including the claimants description of the timings of the onset and progression of the disease. As a result, the council has reviewed the medical assessors guidance and has suggested strengthening the guidance to help ensure claimants are not missing out on claims for benefit.
