Legal profession recognised in New Year Honours

The 2017 New Year Honours list published on Friday 30 December 2016 recognises the achievements of a number of legal professionals who have made a significant contribution to public life.

Peter Fish, Director General at the Government Legal Department (GLD), is among those awarded for legal services to government. Peter is the Legal Adviser to the Home Office and is responsible for providing legal advice to ministers and officials across the full range of Home Office business. He has been fundamental in improving the quality of legal advice to government, and has held a number of other key government legal roles during his career.

In the wider Government Legal Service, Caroline Ross, a lawyer at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, has been made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for her Legal Services to International Climate Change Negotiations.

Iain Macleod, FCO Legal Adviser, has been made a KCMG (Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George) for distinguished service in a number of roles including previously in the Home Office and Cabinet Office legal teams.

Shehzad Charania, a lawyer at the Attorney Generals Office, has been awarded an MBE for his services to international law and legal diplomacy.

Jonathan Jones, Treasury Solicitor and head of the government legal profession, said:

I would like to congratulate all those recognised in the New Year Honours List. Their outstanding work is helping to uphold the rule of law and support the delivery of important services to the public.
