Minister for Africa welcomes signing of the Accra Declaration

Speaking after the Declaration was signed Mr Ellwood said:

I warmly welcome the Accra Declaration signed by all Ghanas Presidential candidates. Today they have sent a clear and united message that there is no place in these elections for incitement, intimidation or violence. And that Ghanas electoral rules and regulations must be respected. It is vital that the Electoral Commission is independent, unfaltering in its administration of the process, and swift and resolute in listening and responding to legitimate concerns. Likewise it is critical that candidates place national interest above partisan concerns and that, whatever the result, it is accepted or challenged through constitutionally mandated routes.

Ghana has a strong democratic tradition. It has often been an example to the rest of Africa. We, along with the rest of the international community, will be watching closely, ready to work with whomever wins and united in our hope that all Ghanaians come together to write the next chapter of its successful democracy on 7 December.
