Guidance: Apply to open an alternative provision free school

This guidance sets out the process for applying to set up a new AP free school as part of a partnership. Each partnership applying to open an AP free school should include:

  • one lead applicant who will act as the lead partner - this can be anexisting APor mainstream provider or a new proposer
  • at least one local authority though more than one local authority can also be involved in the partnership

Lead applicants should:

  • read the guidance on how to apply to set up a new AP free school
  • complete the application forms you received after completing the mandatory pre-registration
  • submit the completed application forms to fs.applications@education.gov.uk between 9am on 28 November 2022 and midday on 17 February 2023

Application forms sent before 28 November will not be accepted.

If you did not complete the pre-registration, which closed on 24 October 2022, youll be unable to submit an application for a new AP free school in this wave.
