Before you start

Before you start, read the guidance about waste exemptions to check if you need to register an exemption. Check you can comply with exemption conditions.?

To register youll need to know:?

  • which exemptions you need see the list of waste exemptions

  • name, address and contact details of the person or business carrying out the waste activity?

  • company registration number and registered address if youre a limited company or limited liability partnership

  • site location address and postcode or grid reference where the waste activity will take place (the site location may be different to the business address)

Waste exemptions last for 3 years. Youll get an email when its time to renew.

To deregister or update your contact details youll need:

  • your waste exemption (WEX) registration number?

  • the email address you used to register the exemption

Linear networks and bulk registrations

Linear networks

If your waste activity involves maintenance work along a road, canal, track or other type of linear network, you may need to use the bulk and linear networks registration form instead of the digital service.

Bulk registrations

If you want to register the same exemption at 30 or more sites (known as bulk registration) you should use the bulk and linear networks registration form instead of the digital service.

The Environment Agency is proposing to introduce charges for waste exemptions. You can take part in the consultation on charge proposals until 20 January 2025.
