Department of Health

The Health Secretary today (16 July 2016) announced that Ed Smith has been appointed as the new joint Chair of Monitor and Chair-Designate of the NHS Trust Development Authority (TDA).

Baroness Hanham will step aside, as she continues to recover from ill-health, and Sir Peter Carr remains in post until October to assist the new Chair with the transition.

Ed Smith will oversee the development of an ever closer partnership between the 2 organisations and the appointment of a single chief executive. Building on the work of Baroness Hanham, he will support hospitals with the crucial work they have already started to balance their books and clamp down on spending on expensive staffing agencies.

Professor Lord Darzi of Denham will also join the Monitor Board as a non-executive director.

The Health Secretary said:

Baroness Hanham has given outstanding service to Monitor. She has led the organisation through a difficult period of change and has been a great source of leadership and support for staff. We look forward to seeing her back on the Board as a non-executive director as soon as she is able, serving out her full term.

I would also like to pay tribute to Sir Peter Carr for his long years of exemplary leadership to the NHS, and thank him for the important work he is doing to ensure a stable transition as we bring the two organisations closer together. I know the many colleagues he has worked with over the years will join with me in wishing him the very best for the future.

Ed Smith said:

I am delighted and honoured to be asked to take this role. I look forward to getting to grips with forging an ever closer partnership between the two organisations and our partners in the NHS. I know there are great people working at both Monitor and the TDA, and I am confident that we can deliver the changes needed for the provider sector.

Professor Lord Darzi of Denham said:

I look forward to supporting the important work of Monitor as it forges ahead with this new and enabling partnership with the Trust Development Authority.
