These research reports focus on the experiences of early career teachers (ECTs), mentors and induction tutors involved from the first year of the implementation of the ECF reforms which introduced the 2-year ECF-based induction programmes.

The findings of the reports are based on:

  • 3 surveys, one conducted in December 2021 and January 2022 at the end of the first term (referred to as the baseline survey), one conducted in May and June 2022 at the end of the first year (referred to as the mid-point survey), and one conducted in April and May 2023 towards the end of the second year (referred to as the end-point survey)
  • an initial round of case-study interviews in 11 schools, and interviews with senior leaders and induction tutors in a further 15 schools, followed by a second round of case-study interviews in 8 schools, and interviews with senior leaders and induction tutors in 14 schools
  • discussions with the lead providers responsible for co-ordinating the delivery of the provider-led training programmes
  • 3 workshops with mentors (in June 2022, March 2023 and July 2023)
  • data from the Department of Education (DfE) continuing professional development (CPD) digital service
