Details

HM Treasury and the Bank of England are making changes to the CBDC Engagement Forum, including refreshing the format and reopening membership applications, as well as launching a new Academic Advisory Group. Further information regarding the Engagement Forum and the new Academic Advisory Group is available at the Bank of Englands website, including Terms of Reference, how to apply, and details of Requests for Information for planned working groups. The Engagement Forum and Academic Advisory Group membership list will be updated in due course.

HM Treasury and the Bank of England have established the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) Taskforce to coordinate the exploration of a potential UK CBDC.

The purpose of the Taskforce is to ensure a strategic approach to, and to promote close coordination between, the UK authorities as they explore CBDC. The Taskforce is co-chaired by the Deputy Governor of the Bank of England, Jon Cunliffe, and HM Treasurys Director General of Financial Services, Gwyneth Nurse.

The Government and the Bank of England have not yet made a decision on whether to introduce a CBDC in the UK.

The terms of reference for the Taskforce are above.

In addition to the Taskforce, HMT and the Bank of England have established two new forums to engage key stakeholders (Engagement Forum) and technical experts (Technology Forum) through the process.

The membership of the Engagement Forum is above.

Details about the Technology Forum can be found on the website of the Bank of England, which convenes that forum.
