Greg Clark's Ramadan message 2016

Department for Communities and Local Government

The Communities Secretary, Greg Clark said:

As Muslim communities across the United Kingdom come together, it is a time for us all to reflect on the importance of compassion and how we can better help one another.

The monies raised for charity, during this special month of fasting and prayer, are astonishing, with some estimates suggesting that this year they will top 100 million.

But this support does not only manifest itself in monies raised.

Mosques around the country are once again opening their doors to the whole community, to show non-Muslims what Ramadan is all about it, bringing people of all faiths and none together as part of the Big Iftar.

Mosques like the Makkah Mosque in Leeds, which I visited last week, will be welcoming their wider community in on 9 June to break the fast, to share in good company and no doubt share some great food.

And its not just mosques, volunteers from churches, synagogues, community centres and schools will all be welcoming local residents to join the fast-breaking meal and encouraging people to build new friendships.

I wish you well over the forthcoming month and a very peaceful Ramadan.

Ramadan Mubarak.
