Open consultation: Decapods: call for evidence

Home Office

We are pleased to announce the launch of our Decapods: Call for Evidence, running in conjunction with the Department of Health Northern Ireland.

In 2022, the Animal Welfare (Sentience) Act recognised all vertebrates, cephalopods and decapod crustaceans as sentient. The Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 (ASPA) regulates the use of vertebrates and cephalopods in science and education but not decapods.

There is limited available evidence on the use of decapods in science and education. Therefore we are launching this call for evidence to understand how decapods are currently used in science and education in the UK.

The evidence will inform future policy development, including whether and if so, how the use of decapods in science should be regulated. We expect there to be further evidence gathering and stakeholder engagement, informed by the results.

Please note that this is a call for evidence for individuals and organisations that use decapods for scientific or educational purposes.

This is not a consultation, and we are not seeking views on the policy of regulating decapods at this stage.
