The Lord Chancellor and Lord Chief Justice have published their joint response to the public consultation: Judicial Discipline Consultation on proposals about thejudicial disciplinary system in England and Wales.

The proposals in the consultation document were developed by an independent working group over the course of a comprehensive year-long review.The Lord Chancellor and Lord Chief Justice considered responses to the consultation carefully. They are pleased to give their joint response in this document, setting out the proposals which they have decided to adopt for implementation.

An effective disciplinary system is vital to maintaining public confidence in the judiciary. Once implemented, the finalised proposals will improve what is already a well-regarded disciplinary system.

Consultation description

The Lord Chancellor and Lord Chief Justice are seeking views on proposals for improvements to the judicial disciplinary system in England and Wales.

The 41 proposals in the consultation document were developed by an independent working group over the course of a comprehensive year-long review. They cover a range of issues including improvements to the statutory complaints-handling process, measures to promote transparency, and steps to improve diversity amongst the judges and lay people who work within the system.

An effective disciplinary system is vital to maintaining public confidence in the judiciary. This consultation is an opportunity for those with an interest in the system to inform decisions that will shape how it operates in future.
