This guidance is being reviewed following the publication of the adult social care action plan on 15 April 2020. We will publish updated guidance soon.

In the interim, please see the following paragraphs in the adult social care action plan for up-to-date guidance on:

  • testing for residents: paragraphs 1.27, 1.30, 1.32 and 1.33
  • testing for staff: paragraph 2.8
  • managing outbreaks: paragraph 1.23

This guidance is for care homes, local health protection teams, local authorities, clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) and registered providers of accommodation for people who need personal or nursing care.

It sets out how to:

  • admit and care for residents safely
  • protect care home staff

  1. Updated the guidance to add a loss of, or change in, normal sense of smell or taste (anosmia) as a symptom of coronavirus. The changes are in Section 2, Annex A and Annex B.
