Open consultation: Understanding the use of unregistered alternative provision

Department For Education

July 11
11:00 2022

The government is committed to improving education and strengthening protections for children and young people in unregistered alternative provision settings so that every placement is safe and has clear oversight.

To achieve this, we want to hear from:

  • local authority representatives who commission placements in unregistered alternative provision settings
  • school-based commissioners (including mainstream, special and independent schools) who use placements in unregistered alternative provision settings
  • those leading or working in registered alternative provision schools who commission additional provision at unregistered settings
  • those leading or working in unregistered alternative provision settings to deliver education commissioned by any of the above

We encourage you to complete the call for evidence to help us enhance our understanding of the sector. This will help us improve the experiences of all children and young people requiring unregistered alternative provision.

The findings from this consultation will be considered when designing the new national vision and delivery model for the SEND and alternative provision system described in the SEND and alternative provision green paper, SEND review: right support, right place, right time.
