FCO minister for the Middle East, Hugh Robertson, said:

I welcome the adoption of UNSC resolution 2140 which provides for the use of sanctions against those seeking to derail Yemens political transition.

Todays resolution, based on a UK draft, sends a clear message to those wanting to block Yemens progress to a better future: attempts to derail the process will result in swift and firm action from the international community, including targeted sanctions and asset freezes.

I would particularly like to commend the role of the Gulf Cooperation Council for its continuing support for the Yemeni transition.

Further information

The resolution passed today sets up a sanctions regime, but does not list any individual. It will be for the Committee and Panel of Experts to report to the Security Council on next steps
